Insekten besitzen sehr empfindliche Wahrnehmungsorgane, so auch f
Insects are small creatures, yet they possess acute sensory organs. This talk discusses some effects of size on hearing and what is actually meant by "hearing". After showcasing a microphone based on the fly Ormia ochracea, the potential influence of the elasticity of the insect?s exosceleton on acoustic perception will be the focus of the talk. Emphasis will be put on the hearing of mosquitoes, as these insects, beside the intrinsical value of basic science, have an economic and medical impact on the global scale. Some of these species show pronounced and complex acoustic behaviour. The results presented will include antenna images with confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), vibration spectra of the antenna measured with laser doppler vibrometry (LDV), and computer simulations of the external hearing apparatus, as well as implications for ecology and smaller, better, and different microphones.
